1- Choose a set of computer speakers

As long as your laptop has a USB or speaker/headphone port, you should be able to use most wired computer speakers.

  • Most computer speakers have a 3.5mm (1.8″) audio input, which is a small plug that fits into a regular headphone jack. Also, these speakers must be connected to the power supply.
  • USB speakers are powered by your computer so there is no need to plug them into the wall. It might be easier if you have a USB port available.

2- Arrange the speakers in your workspace:

Most speakers are clearly marked as left (L) or right (R) on the back or bottom of the unit. If your speakers come with a subwoofer, you may want to place it behind the system or ground. Make sure that wherever you place your speakers, the connecting cable reaches its corresponding input on the computer, and the power cable (if you have one) can safely reach an outlet.

3- Minimize the speaker volume:

This is done by turning the speaker volume on the speakers (just one) all the way to the left

4- To connect the speaker to the laptop, set the volume of your laptop to about 75%

You can do this by clicking the volume icon on the taskbar (lower right corner on Windows) or the menu bar (upper right corner on Mac) and dragging it to about ¾. Windows users will probably see two different sliders, use the one labeled “Programs”.

5- Connect the connection to the laptop:

With the laptop turned on, connect the audio connection cable (USB or 3.5 mm (1.8″)) to the corresponding port on the laptop.

If you use a 3.5mm (8-inch) jack, look for a small jack on the side of your laptop that has a headphone or speaker design.

If you use USB to connect the speakers, the system may start installing drivers. If prompted to insert a disc, insert the disc that came with your speakers and follow the instructions on the package.

6- Turn on the speakers:

The power button is usually located on the back of one of the speakers. If your speakers have a power cord, plug it in before turning on the speakers.

7- Play some of the sounds on your laptop:

Start some audio (streaming music, CD video, etc.) on your laptop.

  • Find a comfortable listening volume. Turn the volume knob on your computer speakers slowly until you reach your desired volume.
  • If you can’t hear anything, make sure the speakers are connected and plugged in if necessary.
  • If you’re using Windows and you can hear sound but the sound is coming from your laptop’s speakers, you may need to manually change your sound settings. Press ⊞ Win + S and type control. When “Control Panel” appears, select it, then click on “Sound”. In the “Playback” section, you should see two laptop sound cards and new speakers. Double-click New Speakers to change your default sound device. Click “OK” to hear the sound through your new speakers.
